Eph. 6:18, “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Are you alert in your prayers? I guess the answer for any praying person would be “sometimes.” For we pray in the sunshine, and we pray in the dark; we pray walking along with our blood flowing through our veins, and we pray in our beds in the long hours of the night. Perhaps then that is not what Paul is talking about here. Perhaps he is encouraging us to keep tuned in to what are the prayer needs around us. We may pray for those needs both when we are sleepy and when we are wide awake.
“Praying for all the Lord’s people” is a good way to summarize these 50 Days of Prayer for Fellowship Church. It’s not that we stop praying for the world and those outside of our church—by no means. It is just that we are taking the time to focus our prayers on the particular needs of our church, and listen for God’s response.
So I ask you, as we approach the two-week mark, to keep praying. And to keep alert. Who or what is God bringing to mind for prayer? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what God wants you to bring to Him in prayer, then follow the Spirit’s lead to do so. As He does, don’t hold back; pray for that person or situation “with all kinds of prayers and requests.”
So let’s pray:
Loving Father, God of all, teach us to pray. We are alert to you now; show us who and what you want us to pray for today. We know that you want us to bring all kinds of prayers and requests to you for our church, yet sometimes we forget. We lift up our church now and ask that you would bring a flood of prayers to your throne, even today. Amen.
